Feeling down? Be careful what you feed your ears and eyes

Recently a friend defended her loyalty to the news. She said the problem with the country is that people don’t watch the news. I think the problem with the country is that people have become too reliant on the politically charged news (and social media) to make decisions. In our view, the news is one of the main reasons peopleare so divided these days.

There was a time when the news was an informative and educational part of American life, but that time has passed. In this age, a steady diet of news—any news, conservative or progressive—has nothing to offer other than a migraine, ulcer, fit of anger, or all three.

If you find yourself in a figuratively dark place and in need of light, we suggest turning off the news and social media. That’s a good first step to get your mind right and get out from under the dark clouds of depression and anxiety.

What does the good Book say? It says to fix our eyes and ears not on things of this world but on things above—whatever is noble, beautiful, excellent, and praiseworthy. It also says if we fix our eyes on our salvation, our heavenly prize, so we will be in “perfect peace.” Let’s face it, there is nothing peaceful about the news. It causes nothing but anxiety and worry. And it focuses non-stop on the “patterns of this world,” which we are called to reject, rather than heavenly, spiritual things.

Breakthrough formula: only feed your mind good things. We suggest a steady diet of Biblical bread (Proverbs is a great book of wisdom to read daily – get the NIRV version if you want a really simple translation), old and wholesome shows and movies, music, and great literature. Your mind will thank you and so will your body. How? Because where the mind goes, the body follows. It’s true: good health starts in the mind and heart.

Meditate on this scripture this week:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

God bless always.
